Anyone who endures my endless stream of online updates and posts will know I’m fascinated by the intersection of creative expression and spirituality. So you can imagine how discovering Sufi Comics was a lovely and welcome surprise.

Brothers Mohammed Ali Vakil and Mohammed Arif Vakil from India have developed a unique genre of “comics for the soul.” I really enjoy and appreciate how they are able to present timeless wisdom and spiritual guidance from traditional Islamic sources through these easily accessible short comic strips. During Ramadan recently I found myself reading and reflecting upon precious nasiha (advice) from great scholars and teachers such as Rabia Basri, beautifully rendered and illustrated on my iPad.

I asked the creators about their intention for and experience with the project:  “Islam has a rich heritage of spiritual teachings. These contain the keys to live a more happy and peaceful life in this world, and also excel in the next world. These teachings inspired us to create Sufi Comics. Our purpose is to make spiritual teachings more accessible and enjoyable to read by presenting them in the medium of comics.”
Download a free version of their 40-page e-book from their website. Their new Rumi-inspired book will be available shortly.
