In an age filled with myths and misunderstandings of Islam, this upcoming movie looks set to dispel a range of stereotypes. By Peter Gould.

Have you ever met someone who inspired you profoundly? Now imagine a whole group of people who have that effect on you.

This has been my personal experience with the subjects of The Strangers, a forthcoming film that shares the incredible story of a community of British Muslim converts established in the 1970s.

I asked Director Ahmed Peerbux to share some insights about capturing such a fascinating and important story against the backdrop of negativity surrounding Islam. He told me:

This film documents an important moment in both British and Islamic history: the establishment of a community of converts that was really the first of its kind in Britain, pioneering traditional Sufism and Islam as a social reality on English soil. Not stuffy, organised religion – that was precisely what people were running away from in the 60s and 70s – but a living, breathing Islam saying yes! to life in accordance with the Prophetic Way, covering everything such as how one would eat, sit, be with people and be alone.

This will truly be a special film and I highly recommend checking it out. Keep up to date on its Facebook page, or contribute to a crowd-funding initiative at Indiegogo to put the finishing touches on the film.
