The repackaging of this ancient tooth-cleaning twig illustrates how innovative and practical design can help preserve a traditional practice. By Peter Gould.
The miswak undergoes a creative facelift with this beautiful take on a much-loved Prophetic practice. Leen Sadder has done just that with THIS Toothbrush. What started out as a fun project for college soon snowballed into an Internet hit. And it’s no surprise. Leen’s re-packaging of the miswak into a super-cool Cutter Case is practical as well as convenient. The plastic case keeps the miswak clean and moist, and the cap doubles as a cutter that solves the problem of needing to trim, peel, and chew the twig to reveal new fibres.
Years after her original design project, Leen was still receiving emails asking how to get their hands on THIS, which prompted her to start a crowdfunding campaign. Good news – the campaign exceeded its target and is currently in production.
As for its progress, Leen said: “The production process has been a great learning experience and I’m extremely excited to get THIS in the hands of our supporters. Input from the community has greatly shaped where the product is today, so I’m especially looking forward to receiving feedback on the Cutter Case once it’s launched.”
THIS is a powerful example of innovative design refreshing a tradition into modern practicality.
